The Secret to an Arizona Summer

We discovered the secret to surviving an Arizona summer: the White Mountains. And it’s all about the altitude.

Phoenix elevation? About 1,100 feet. Elevation in Greer, Az.? Just more than 8,500 sweet, cool feet. The tail end of a four-hour drive from Phoenix put us in the middle of a rain storm, a pine forest and a  series sweeping grassland meadows.

From 110 degrees to 60.

And while breathing could be something of an adventurer, walking through fields of wild flowers in the middle of July — after being surrounded by sand — was a delight.

Rocking into the Afterlife

Why go gently into the good night? In Australia, apparently, more and more folk are choosing to rock into the afterlife. “Stairway to Heaven,” and AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” are increasingly common songs for funerals, according to an Associated Press story.

Can you imagine if more of that happens here? How many funerals in Tennessee would feature “Rocky Top?” Or, maybe go with Hank Williams Jr., “Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound.” Or, not.

Some songs might even be nice. Warren Zevon’s - the guy who penned “Werewolves of London” - last album included “Keep Me in Your Heart.” Too serious? The less sentimental could go with Warren’s “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead,” instead.

The possibilities are endless.

My favorite example from the news story? Monty Python’s “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.”

Probably not a choice I’d make. But, at least some people out there have a sense of humor.

I’m back

I know. I know. I know. I’m a bad blogger.

I’m in the media industry, so I know how blogs are supposed to work. Daily updates. Heck, hourly updates.

I could give you good reasons as to why I’ve been gone so long. Like, it’s hard to type while driving 600 miles at 75 mph (although an Arizona state trooper claimed in was 87 mph). Or, I’ve spent so much time lately on conference calls, WebEx presentations and on-site computer training that the last thing I want to do is turn on a computer at night.

But, I have to be honest. That’s just noise, as Jeff VanVonderen says. I have been unfaithful to my blog. I’m cheating with another internet phenom.

Facebook.

Yes, I realize by the time people my age start enjoying Facebook that it’s a trend on the downslope.

But, I don’t care. I will play Scrabulous, write on Super Walls and send Flair as long as I am getting poked by friends.

I saw a funny video about what would happen if some friend you hadn’t seen in years came to your house and interacted with you as if it was Facebook. Check it out.

Now that I’ve come clean, I will do my best to balance my time between the two. Really. Yes I will. Will to.

Spring is Over

Our first Arizona spring ended, emphatically on May 18. How could we tell? Ye ol’ mercury hit 100, slamming straight up to 105. And just to ease us into the season, Monday was a toasty 108.

For newcomers such as us, it’s a point of interest. And a cause for questions: How much water must one drink to avoid looking like the Wicked Witch of the West, post Dorthy dousing? Where did Michelle but the Burt’s Bees cream that keeps skin from cratering like dried out leather?

You get the point. It’s hot. So rather than grouse all summer, he’s a few 100-degree facts from the National Weather Service. And a pledge: I won’t write about the heat anymore.

Unless it hits 120, of course. With that, we’ll fry eggs on the pool deck.
